1) First of all, introduce yourself: tell us who you are, how old you are, where you are from, what you do in life, and how long you have been embracing a plant-based lifestyle!

Hello! I’m Orvel Douglas, and I’m excited to share my journey with you. Hailing from Birmingham, England, I’ve been calling NYC my home for the past 31 years.

At 61 years young, I’ve dedicated the last 30 years to nourishing my body with plant-based foods, and it’s been a transformative experience.

2) Why did you decide to embark on this dietary journey?

Through thorough research, I discovered that our choice of food can either promote health or pave the way for disease over time. I wanted optimal health for myself, and 30 years later, I can confidently say that this decision has paid off—I have no health issues.

In fact, many of my friends from my generation are grappling with health challenges or, sadly, have passed away.

3) Do you feel better since embracing a plant-based lifestyle? What changes have you noticed?

I’ve never considered myself a sickly person, but I’ve definitely noticed a boost in my energy levels. It’s fascinating—the older I get, the more vitality I seem to have!

At 61, I’m running under a 7-minute mile, something I couldn’t even dream of in my younger days. Each morning, I wake up feeling incredible—zero aches or pains!

4) Is there any food that you have had more difficulty eliminating from your diet?

Allow me to share a bit about my dietary evolution. I started as a vegan and then transitioned to a raw vegan diet before finally embracing a fruitarian lifestyle for the last 13 years.

That’s when my energy levels soared to new heights! I never found it challenging to eliminate certain foods; it’s all about what I eat and how it makes me feel—that’s the real deal.

5) Are there still many stereotypes associated with choosing a plant-based lifestyle?

Of course, there are stereotypes surrounding my choices—people often say I’ll become malnourished or get sick. I hear it all the time!

Yet, I continue to thrive on my fruits and let my vitality speak for itself. I defy the norms associated with those misconceptions.

6) Where do you get inspiration for your dishes? And do you follow seasonality?

As for my meals, they’re delightfully simple. No complicated recipes—just fresh fruit or a swift smoothie. My approach mirrors how animals in the wild eat: they enjoy their food in its natural state, and I follow suit.

7) What is your favorite dish? Would you be willing to provide us with the recipe?

Since my meals are simple and fruit-based, my favorites are smoothies. A quick blend of fresh fruits creates a vibrant and nourishing meal. No specific recipe needed—just let the natural flavors shine!

8) For those wondering: How do you make sure to follow a balanced regime by eliminating some foods from your diet?

My philosophy about a balanced diet has changed drastically. In nature, animals may thrive on just a couple of food sources throughout their lives, whereas humans often overload on various combinations, leading to deficiencies and diseases.

I’ve found that my simple eating habits have kept me healthy and vibrant. I haven’t been sick in 50 years; while genetics play a part, I credit my dietary lifestyle for my well-being.

9) Besides diet, has this change impacted other aspects of your life?

My journey has truly opened my eyes, and I’ve come to understand the significant role the environment plays in our health.

This lifestyle has helped me become more mindful of how I interact with the world around me, inspiring me to make choices that align with sustainability and well-being.
