“Hello, guys, my name is Daniele.

I’m a deaf-mute guy, I’m 29 years old and I come from Milan.

I’m a sports instructor and I work at a CrossFit gym.

In addition to my job, I dedicate a lot of time to my workouts and I’ve been following a healthy vegetarian diet for three years.”

Can you tell us why did you become vegetarian?

The reason I became vegetarian is purely ethical. I am very sensitive to issues related to nature and I felt the need to do my part for the welfare of animals and the environment, in general.

Is there any food that you found more challenging to eliminate from your diet?

To be honest, no. The difficulties, though I wouldn’t label them as such, come out from people: judgments and unsolicited opinions.

I have often explained my lifestyle to people who asked, but someone didn’t understand and didn’t accept it at all.

How do you ensure a balanced diet with these “restrictions”?

The restrictions are imposed by society on those who make this choice. Eating vegetarian does not mean living with restrictions!

As for the diet, balance is found by balancing the three macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, and fats), according to your needs.

It’s a bit more complex, but with the consulting of a trusted nutritionist everything is possible.

Are there any stereotypes associated with this choice?

I believe it’s a matter of culture, tradition and habits, more than stereotypes. As humanity progresses, these beliefs often prove to be incorrect and in contrast to the times.

There are countless examples related to this line of thinking: from black people, to women, to the LGBTQ+ community and there are examples of traditions and cultures from other countries, that we completely reject, and vice versa.

It simply involves abandoning an outdated ‘tradition’ and finding new ones that prioritize every living being on Earth.

I understand that it may be challenging to stir the conscience of many, but it is a just struggle and should be pursued as such.

Do you feel better since you adopted this dietary path?

Yes, especially morally, because going from an omnivorous diet to a vegetarian one is not a big change for you, but it is a big change for the environment.

It’s a selfless choice!

Besides diet, has this change impacted other aspects of your life?

Not really, the most significant impact might be having a limited choice at restaurants. Nothing serious, though.

Do you have advice for those considering this path?

I could list many reasons why switching to a vegetarian diet is the right thing to do.

I’ll just say: look within yourself, choose to do something for the planet, fight for a cause, fight for those who can’t defend themselves.

Simply choose a plant-based product over an animal one at the supermarket.

What methods or tools help you maintain this lifestyle?

Honestly, it’s very simple. I take traditional recipes and convert them (if necessary) using plant-based ingredients.

Same process, same effort, better taste!

I’ve also discovered new recipes that expand my food choices. There’s no technique or trick; it’s straightforward.

What are the joys of living this way?

One and only one – not consuming living beings. That’s it, because it doesn’t really change anything for you, but it does for the planet, as I mentioned before.

How have you changed since adopting this lifestyle?

This lifestyle makes me feel like a person who hasn’t just demanded, but has also given in this life, not just obtained but sacrificed, and has left a mark in the lives of loved ones, teaching something to someone.

Fighting for someone or something makes you a protagonist capable of influencing others, regardless of the cause.

Switching to a vegetarian diet isn’t the final step that makes you a champion of something, but it’s the first of many steps that will determine who you are and your values, as long as you don’t let the change intimidates you!
