Expat Adventures: Fernanda’s Journey from Brazil to Australia
In a world that often feels smaller thanks to technology and globalization, the story of Fernanda Konrath da Rosa stands out as a beacon of courage and adventure. Born and raised in Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, Fernanda at the age of 33, has journeyed far beyond her homeland to establish a new life in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
This move, spurred not by necessity but by an intrinsic desire for exploration and personal growth, has led Fernanda down a path of discovery, not just of a new country but of herself.
In her heartwarming narrative, she shares the motivations behind her significant life change, the challenges and triumphs of settling into a country with a culture vastly different from her own, and the profound impact this decision has had on her life.
Fernanda’s story is not just about the physical journey from Brazil to Australia but about the transformative power of stepping into the unknown with an open heart and an adventurous spirit.
Tell us a bit about yourself: where were you born, how old are you, and where do you currently live?
My name is Fernanda, and I hail from city of Novo Hamburgo in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. At 33, I find myself quite a distance from my birthplace, currently residing in Sydney, New South Wales. This beautiful Australian city has been my home for some years now, offering a blend of urban living and natural beauty that I’ve come to cherish.
What motivated you to make this significant life change?
In Brazil, my life seemed to tick all the boxes for comfort and stability. I had a fulfilling job and a supportive social circle, yet there was a persistent feeling of restlessness, a thirst for something more that I couldn’t quite quench.
This inner call for adventure propelled me to step out of my comfort zone and embark on a journey to Australia. I was driven by a desire to explore new horizons, to immerse myself in a different culture, and to see what life had in store for me beyond the familiar.
Have there been any significant changes in your life following this decision?
Oh yes for sure! In the beginning I was planning to stay just for 8 months. I had a girlfriend back in Brazil and I was planning just to come to Australia and enjoy a little bit and then go back to Brazil, but all my plans changed. I fell in love with Australia.
What differences do you find between living in your home country and in Australia?
The cultural differences are striking. Despite the warmth and vitality of Brazil, the tranquility and security I’ve experienced in Australia are unparalleled. The ability to walk the streets alone at night without fear is something I never take for granted. Of course, the distance from my family weighs heavily on my heart, reminding me of the sacrifices made for this adventure.
How often do you go back home, and how do you feel each time?
In the six years since I’ve made Australia my home, I’ve only managed to return to Brazil twice. Each visit is a profound emotional journey, a bittersweet mix of joyous reunions and the inevitable goodbye. The time spent with family and friends is precious, making the farewells all the more challenging.
What do you miss the most about Brazil?
Without a doubt, it’s the connection to my family and my close-knit circle of friends. There’s a unique comfort in being surrounded by people who have known you your entire life, and the distance does amplify the longing for those familiar bonds and shared histories.
What are your future plans?
I’m on the cusp of applying for my permanent residency here in Australia. My aspirations are to continue building a life here, to delve deeper into the opportunities this country offers, and to perhaps bridge the gap between my two worlds. Australia has become a second home, and I’m eager to see how my journey here unfolds.
What advice would you give to someone who would like to make a courageous choice like yours?
My advice is simple yet heartfelt: Just go for it. Embrace the uncertainty and the myriad of emotions that come with making a life-altering decision.
It’s natural to feel daunted at the outset, to question your choices, especially when the going gets tough. But trust in the journey, in the transformative power of stepping into the unknown. The experiences, the growth, the adventures await—they’re truly unforgettable and will enrich your life in ways you can’t even imagine.
